The Retro repertoire 2017/2018

Frequently asked questions

The Retrosettes inject contemporary music with a retro flavour and revive the past within a modern soundscape.

Their music combines modernity and vintage in a cool, elegant mix of sounds from 1960s Pop, Northern Soul and Disco. Their music seamlessly echoes The Beatles era which blends into the present.

The Retrosettes have impressed maharajas and fashion designers, filmmakers and fans alike. Cult film director and Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino (La Grande Belleza) chose the band for the opening sequence of his film Youth. Shunning Bollywood, an Indian prince handpicked the band as the highlight of his fairy-tale feast.

A simple YouTube clip that was recorded in the historic Liverpool “Parr Street Studios” proved to be ground-breaking. Paolo Sorrentino came across the video by chance online and recognised that the band’s style would fit perfectly with his new movie. The Retrosettes subsequently made their debut in the Swiss town of Flims, where they performed their stunning version of the Candy Staton´s classic “You Got The Love” in the presence of Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel.

Now the “Fab Five” from Manchester release their debut album “1, 2, Yes, Go!” (Wasted Talent/Universal Music Group). The title refers to drummer Rick Weedon’s method of counting beats before songs. The album was produced by Danton Supple, who has previously worked with Coldplay, U2, and Morrissey.

Their laid-back, feel-good vibes and their individual style, described as “Northern Soul”, captures audiences, especially in concert. Performing centre stage are Helen and Paul Bytheway, who offer solos and duets which are truly dazzling, but never fail to generate a relaxed vibe.

The band members had previously performed as part of the jazz and blues scene in Manchester before Paul Bytheway united them on a journey to create pop music with a certain twist. From this, an authentic, modern sound with the feel of the 50’s and 60’s was born, which is perfectly enhanced by Helen. Their first single, “Take a Minute H” instantly displays the many qualities of the Retrosettes, who understand the art of the Rock ‘N’ Roll cameo.

As special guests of Simply Red (on their tour of Germany in July 2016), they demonstrated their extraordinary live sound, which has thrilled audiences since their beginnings in 2011. In 2017 they are set to tour Germany, Austria and Switzerland with American Violinist Lindsey Stirling.
